When you use Purge Away you may notice that the material at the end of the process has a rough texture and is lighter in weight from the base materials you run. This is because a dynamic reaction has occurred. The purge material activated, and it expanded to force the purge into the deep recesses and dead spots of the enclosed barrel, nozzle, adapters, and other tooling.

The material sticks to the barrel wall and is moved forward (dragged) by the feed screw, creating an accumulation layer on the metal surfaces that needs to be cleaned when changing color and resin.
Purge Away attacks the accumulation layer with an engineered particle that scrapes the polymer on the metal surfaces. As this particle breaks down it reveals new edges to keep attacking the buildup. Unlike manufactured abrasives such as glass, our material is too brittle to attack the metal surfaces but is excellent at attacking polymer.
Manufacturing Benefits
Accumulation Layer/Drag Flow Build Up
Booster Shot: Compatible with all resin systems. Matches your MFI and Processing Temperatures.
Improve Product Quality: When the accumulation layer builds up, it carbonizes and breaks off during production, creating streaks, specks, spots and discoloration. That's why it is important to use a Commercial Purge Compound (CPC) like Purge Away.

Reduce Scrap: Using a CPC when transitioning between jobs and materials can reduce scrap by up to 70% versus just purging with base resins. This is because base resins don't have additives or abrasives to clean the process parts efficiently.
Minimize Down Time: Purge Away reduces down time by initiating smooth transitions between resin systems and colors. Eliminating the need to mechanically clean the screw and barrel with power tools like wire wheels, cup brushes and barrel brushes. Depending on the machine and change-over requirements, down-time can be reduced by up to 50%.

Our Booster Shot is a cost-effective purging compound that designed to be used with your existing purge, to enhance it for tough jobs that need an extra boost to clean your process equipment. is delivered in a sealed poly packet. The purge substrate is a proprietary combination of active ingredients and cleaning particles.
Booster Shots contain no resin, it is designed to work with a variety of base resins so it will match your processing temperatures and MFI. The mix is a cake like powder, the technology behind it is a combination of active and inert ingredients. The active ingredients expand to reach the dead areas in the process equipment. The inert ingredients are engineered cleaning particles that scour the internal parts of your equipment to remove degraded materials, colors and other contaminants.
The purge is designed to work under standard barrel/process operating temperatures.
All the ingredients in the Booster Shot are FDA approved, making it safe and easy to use. Purge Away is considered Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA and can be used on applications that have direct contact with food.

Shorter Purge Cycles: When purging an extruder, with a typical pelletized purge compound, the recommendation is to run the pelletized purge at 100% for 10-30 minutes. If you need to match the MFI of the production resin, then you need to blend the pelletized purge it with your base resin and then use a longer purge cycle. Using Purge Away with your base resin dramatically shortens purge cycle times.

Landfills: After a machine is purged, the material produced is blobs, that are mixed composition and usually cannot be recycled or reused. More often than not they end up in a landfill.
Purge Away can reduce landfill waste by over 70% compared to purging machines with only a base resin.
Energy Savings: Using Purge Away helps make changeovers faster and which consumes less energy than longer purge and cleaning cycles.

A) For injection molding machines: add enough of your traditional purge to cover the feed screw, drop in the Booster Shot packet and cover with more resin. Charge the barrel and wait a few minutes for the materials to activate before beginning the purge cycle. The packet size is based on a 1-inch screw diameter with a 20:1 L/D Ratio. For bigger machines adjust the dosing accordingly. The rule of thumb is 1 packet per 1-inch of screw diameter.
B) For extruders: Booster Shots should activate in your barrel under normal process conditions. Booster Shots activate at 175F and is viable up to 700F. Run at low screw speeds but create enough heat to melt the base resin and or purge material. If you need to repeat the process, then run the next charge at a higher screw speed, so you purge at different shear rates.
Dosing is a little different than the procedure for injection molding because extruders are longer and run continuously. Extruders usually need a few packets. Be sure to space the packets out with the resin.
We use the following formula to determine the number of packets for the initial purge cycle.
S = Screw Diameter (in inches)
L = The Barrel L/D Ratio
S+L/20 = # of packets needed.
This formula is a good starting point for both single screw and twinscrew extruders.
